The Digital Society Blog

About

This is a forum to discuss and debate issues related to whatever we think of as the “digital society”. Some of the things I will be covering in this space include:

  • How is (digital) technology changing the way we interact socially?
  • Where is all this leading to? Are we headed towards a better society?
  • Can we empower ourselves in the digital society?
  • What can we do to influence the digital society and how?

The list will grow as we go along, but feel free to suggest other topics.

    Dear Whomever it May Concern:

I am a student at the University of Washington and a researcher for
the World World Information Access Project. I found your blog over the
course of the research work we have been doing, and have read several of
    your posts on media.

We’ve just published a briefing booklet on some of our findings for the
year, and have posted it at:

    http://www.wiareport.org

In particular there is a small write up on arrests of citizen bloggers we
made by analyzing all the news accounts of blogger arrests since 2003. We
found 64 cases in total and broke them down by year, country, and the kinds
of blog posts they were arrested for. We also did some research on ownership
    diversity in Muslim media systems.

The University of Washington will be doing a formal news release about this
in a few days . Please refer to the website above for more information on the report. We hope that our research benefits your organization.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me about the report, or the professor or
who helped direct the research: Phil Howard pnhoward@u.washington.edu.

    Sincerely,

    Rima Saha
